Landscape20 is a multi-purpose topsoil supplied in bulk bag and loose-load formats.
The current RBS range describes it as BS3882:2015 compliant and suitable for landscaping, sports-field construction and larger-scale projects. It is typically a sandy loam and is supplied without contaminated waste, glass or building-material residue.
What Is BS3882:2015 Topsoil?
BS3882:2015 is a British Standard covering the specification and classification of topsoil.
Choosing topsoil that is stated as compliant with this standard gives clearer information about its suitability and quality for landscaping applications.
Bulk Bag or Loose Topsoil?
The best supply format depends on the size of the project and site access.
Bulk bag topsoil keeps the material contained and can be easier to store on site where loose tipping is not suitable.
Loose topsoil can be practical for larger quantities where there is safe access for a tipper delivery.
The current loose Landscape20 option is supplied per tonne and the product page states that tipper loads can range from 1–4 tonnes.
When Should You Choose Small Bag Topsoil?
Small bag topsoil is useful for smaller garden jobs, containers, raised beds, topping up borders and locations where carrying larger quantities is difficult.
The current RBS range includes a 20L blended loam topsoil made from sandy loam and organic matter and described as compliant with BS3882:2015 Multipurpose Grade.
Topsoil vs Compost - What Is the Difference?
Topsoil forms the main growing layer used for lawns, beds and landscaped areas.
Compost is generally used as a growing medium or soil improver and can be mixed with or added to soil depending on the planting project.

Can Topsoil Be Used for New Lawns?
Yes. Suitable topsoil can be used when preparing ground for a new lawn, particularly where the existing soil is poor, uneven or too shallow.
The ground should be prepared and levelled properly before turfing or seeding, and the final topsoil depth should suit the landscaping specification.
Can Topsoil Be Used in Raised Beds?
Yes. Topsoil is commonly used in raised beds, often alongside compost or other suitable organic material depending on what will be grown.
For smaller raised beds, bagged products may be easier to handle. Larger beds can require significantly more material, where bulk bags or loose loads may be more practical.

How Much Topsoil Do You Need?

The current loose Landscape20 product gives an approximate guide of 1 tonne covering around 10m² at 100mm depth. Treat this as a product-specific guide rather than a universal conversion for every topsoil.
How Deep Should Topsoil Be?
The required depth depends on the application.
Lawns, raised beds, borders and planting areas can all require different soil depths, so the landscaping specification and existing ground conditions should be considered before ordering.
Does Topsoil Contain Weeds?
Natural topsoil can contain annual weed seeds. The Landscape20 product information notes that, as a fully natural product, annual weeds may be present but can be managed using normal weed-control methods.
This is different from invasive weeds or contaminated waste, which the Landscape20 specification states are excluded.
