Which Type of Insulation Do You Need?

PIR Insulation Boards for Floors, Walls & Roofs

PIR insulation boards are a popular high-performance rigid insulation option used across a wide range of construction projects. Our foil-faced PIR boards are available in multiple thicknesses for suitable floor, wall and roof applications.

The correct thickness will depend on the complete construction build-up and the required thermal performance. Our range includes commonly used PIR board thicknesses such as 25mm, 50mm, 70mm, 75mm, 100mm, 120mm and 150mm, subject to current stock availability.

Loft Insulation Rolls & Mineral Wool

Loft insulation helps reduce heat loss through the roof space and is commonly installed between and over ceiling joists in suitable cold loft applications.

Our range includes Knauf mineral wool products in different thicknesses and formats, including loft rolls and thermal and acoustic slabs. Mineral wool insulation can provide both thermal and acoustic performance, depending on the product and application.

Always check the manufacturer's application guidance before installation, particularly where multiple layers or a specific total insulation depth are required.

Cavity Wall Insulation

Cavity insulation is designed for suitable external masonry cavity wall construction. Mineral wool cavity slabs fit between the masonry leaves to help reduce heat transfer through the wall system.

EPS boards are easy to handle and cut and are available in several thicknesses. Our range includes EPS70 boards in commonly used sheet sizes such as 2400x1200mm. Always check the product grade and specification against the intended application before installation.

Cavity Closers for Windows & Doors

Insulated cavity closers are used to close cavities around window and door openings. They help reduce cold bridging and limit moisture movement across the cavity when installed as part of a suitable wall system.

Insulated Plasterboard & Thermal Laminate Boards

For suitable internal wall and roof applications, we also stock insulated plasterboard and thermal laminate boards. These combine plasterboard with an insulation layer, allowing thermal insulation and internal lining to be installed as part of one system.

They can be useful for renovation and dry-lining projects where improving thermal performance from the inside is required. The correct product and fixing method will depend on the wall or roof construction.

Understanding Insulation Thickness, R-Value & Thermal Conductivity

Insulation performance should not be judged by thickness alone. Different insulation materials have different thermal properties.

Thermal conductivity, often shown as a lambda value in W/mK, indicates how readily heat passes through a material. A lower thermal conductivity generally indicates better insulation performance for the same thickness.

R-value measures the resistance of a material layer to heat flow. A higher R-value indicates greater thermal resistance.

The overall thermal performance of a wall, floor or roof depends on the complete construction build-up, not simply one insulation product. Where a required U-value is specified, follow the project design, building-control requirements or appropriate professional guidance.

Insulation is commonly required throughout building projects, including external walls, ground floors, roofs, lofts and internal upgrades. The required insulation type and thickness should normally be identified on the construction drawings or specification.
